Music found Newby while he was studying at OCAD, where he had many poetry and writing classes. This pushed him to take the creative writing process seriously and use the skills of metaphors and imagery in his music. Growing up Newby listened to a lot of 80ʼs, 90ʼs and 2000ʼs music, and is inspired by Biggie, Michael Jackson and Mariah Carey, which contribute to his unique sound. Newby creates uptempo hip-hop and contemporary R&B with a few hints of Alternative Dance and Pop.

What would you be doing right now, if it wasnʼt for your music career?

Being whutless somewhere in the world? Thailand FullMoon Festival? Jamaican Countryside? Somewhere I could be free. Somewhere scenic that I could document. I'd probably make a documentary!

How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?

The internet is the main thing pushing music businesses, besides street marketing, which I have done, and I was probably one of the 5% doing it out here. Normally, people just advertise online, but that could be hard, especially with all the musicians and Instagram ads. I would go face to face and introduce myself and hand out a little card on the train, conferences and any place that I had an opportunity to introduce people to my music.

What is your creative process like?

It was very scattered at first, just trying to find my type of sound. I used to write all types of songs, but now i focus more on my projects. I like to plan things, and I like things being cohesive.

Who would you most like to collaborate with?

That's tough! Probably some old school Rappers from the city. It would be dope to work with the people who paved the way for the city!

What is the most trouble youʼve ever gotten into?

Oh my gosh, I canʼt even name one to be specific, just because I used to misbehave 24/7... The first time I got suspended tho, was in grade 3...that morning my mom told me “Please donʼt get in any trouble today, I donʼt want to school calling me”....4 hours later..Hi, your son is being suspended...

If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?

It would have to be an artist who is colourful and bouncy. Maybe a boy band? N Sync?.. BTS?LOL

Where have you performed? What are your favourite and least favourite venues?

I have performed in Toronto a few times in different spots, I've done open mics too. I think supermarket is a great spot to get practise! I've performed in New York a bunch of times as well. I was doing performances and open mics about every other night out there. I would say in New York, Pianos is the spot!

Which famous musicians do you admire?

I really like Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Biggie, Foxy Brown, Ludacris, Missy Elliot, Epik High!!! (Korean Group) Big Sean, Nicki Minaj and Drizzy Drake. I love their mix or Hip-hop, Rap and R&B.
